native rainforest timber of New Zealand, and is naturally found throughout
the country, especially now in the west coast of the South Island. It
has been used extensively in the past as a timber for joinery, mouldings
and flooring, and even in times of plenty, as framing. The heavy wood
of Rimu is deep red in colour and is a strong and durable timber, although
not so durable as kauri or totara. The heart wood is very beautiful -
one of the most beautiful in the world. It is also very dense, and in
tandem with it's attractive appearance it is sought after as a finishing
timber for doors, frames, floors, panelling and furniture.
Research has touted it's similarity to other podocarp species and may
rightly belong to that genus. (See Dallimore
et al)
Rimu continues
to be a popular timber today. While the yields from forests have been
in decline in late years, it is solely to bring harvests in line with
sustainable levels, ensuring the timber can be enjoyed by future generations.
